(http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=3563) Posted by Crayfish on 03:04:2001 07:14 PM: Please can GYL, Jumpsuit or any other expert give some info on the following, nice one. 1)I always hear that Super Turbo has tacticaly been fully explored and that all tactics and combos are pretty much known to the top players, so why the f*** can't I find indepth guides anywhere on the net? You can get really good indepth guides for just about every other fighting game ever made, why not ST, are the top players trying to secure thier standings or what? 2)Who are some of the top Jap ST players, what are some of their tradmark characters/ tactics and who to look out for at B5? 3)Do the grappling characters (Zang/T.Hawk) really win in ST tournaments in Japan? How is this, cant just be walking in 720's, what else? 4)Has Mike Watson always dominated the US scene, who have been other top ST players, who are their trademark charas/tactics? 5)I hear that ST still has a large following in Japan, is there any chance of Capcom doing an update? With the amount of play data available after 7 years they could make the most balanced fighting game ever. 6)How should I aproach Balrog using Zangief, any specific footsies/tactics outside his normal ones? Any help appreciated, nice one Crayfish. A lot of people wrote faqs/articles, etc for ww, ce, hf, ssf2, but by the time time ST came around - almost everyone just wanted to play the game instead of wasting their time typing up something about it. When A1 came out, the majority of the top players hated the game, so they quit playing street fighter altogether, allowing for ST to really never be documented. Since ST's popularity has waxed and waned over the years, it's just taken a back seat when discussing SF - most people would rather talk about some new tactic they found in a newer/more popular SF. It has nothing to do with the whole STSFN theory - if you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'm sure one of us will know the answer and try to help. Don't expect us to teach you how to play the game though, no one is going to answer that one. You can usually find a ton of strategy/info about ST on #capcom as well. quote: 2)Who are some of the top Jap ST players, what are some of their tradmark characters/ tactics and who to look out for at B5? Aside from the obvious members of the ST team at the TeamUSA vs. TeamJPN tournament a while back - no one really knows. None of us live in Japan, so our interaction with their ST players is close to nil. I know that Daigo is good at ST, I know that there is a 'Blanka God' who is supposedly amazing with Blanka and I've heard Julien refer to a 'Balrog God' who has tons of tricks that he uses. As far as a global awareness of the whole street fighter scene - it's just beginning. B5 will only be the 2nd time more than one or two people from each country get together to play in Street Fighter. quote: 3)Do the grappling characters (Zang/T.Hawk) really win in ST tournaments in Japan? How is this, cant just be walking in 720's, what else? We can only go by what we read - and supposedly they have won tournaments with those characters. In Osaka, there is a tournament that has never stopped having a line for ST since it came out. The fact that Capcom released ST for Dreamcast alone indicates that it still has a huge following in Japan. Seth said that he could walk into almost any random arcade in Japan on a Tuesday at 10 a.m. and there would be amazing ST competition. Bob Painter won the ST Vegas tournament the year that Alpha1 came out with playing only Honda/Zangief. Although Zangief is often ranked as the worst character in ST - I think he can be a really good tournament character. One mistake and Zangief can kill you usually. Granted this, 'one mistake...' holds true for a lot of characters, but the severity of the mistake isn't necessarily as big as it needs to be for other characters to take advantage of. I think THawk does well vs. shotos, beats guile, beats Bison, and compete with some other often seen tournament characters. I would love to see how Japanese THawk players get around Dhalsim/Honda though, cause I sure in the hell can't. quote: 4)Has Mike Watson always dominated the US scene, who have been other top ST players, who are their trademark charas/tactics? Watson has always been the dominator at ST, but when ST was popular there were a few other big names, such as Thomas Osaki, Bob Painter, Graham Wolfe, Jason Cole, Jason Nelson, Matt Wallace, James Romedy, etc. quote: 5)I hear that ST still has a large following in Japan, is there any chance of Capcom doing an update? With the amount of play data available after 7 years they could make the most balanced fighting game ever. I hope not. I have no doubt in my mind that Capcom would just fuck it up. Game isn't perfect, but it's close enough in a lot of ways. Just leave it alone and let it be. People need to stop updating things just to update them, like you often see when it comes to music, movies, fashion, etc. It ain't broken, so don't go try fixing it. quote: 6)How should I aproach Balrog using Zangief, any specific footsies/tactics outside his normal ones? It's a really hard fight, but this is what you should go for. Try to lariat his rushes, try to spd his rushes, and do a lot of low roundhouse and low short/forward...if he rushes and the low short/forward hit him out of it, try to tack on a SPD. You can harass with standing forward at certain ranges, but don't over use it. Probably the biggest mistakes i see a lot of Balrog players do is that after knocking Zangief down they try to do low rush to hit Gief as soon as he gets up, but all good gief's should try to spd that shit. Another sorta decent bootleg tactic I've seen succeed with some mild success is Gief will sit there and mash on jab and if Balrog rushes, it sometimes hits rog out of the rush, when that happens tack on a spd. Overall though I think the fight is in Balrog's favor. shrug.
